Queensland-first surgery on a heart failure patient

A team of cardiologists and their colleagues at The Wesley Hospital have successfully performed a new minimally invasive surgery to treat a leaking mitral valve.

GenesisCare cardiologists Dr Anthony Camuglia and Professor Greg Scalia performed the non-invasive heart surgery at The Wesley Hospital in September.

Cardiologist Dr Anthony Camuglia said a new technique allowed for the replacement of the mitral valve through a vein in the leg without the need to open the patient’s chest.

“The results of this surgery could literally be life-changing for hundreds of Queenslanders with mitral valve disease.”

Dr Greg Scalia said the surgery which is part of a world first trial, is a major step forward in heart care treatment globally.

“Heart failure with mitral disease is a serious medical condition, with patients suffering severe breathlessness and poor quality of life, as well as a high risk of death.”

“We are excited to see where the rest of the study leads us, and we are confident that it will deliver important findings to improve outcomes for patients with mitral valve disease.”
